Event Description

The Bethel Choir conducted by Dr. Merrin Guice Gill and the Bethel Festival Choir have been invited to perform in "A Vision of Light" presented by Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) on the Stern Auditorium/Perlman Stage of Carnegie Hall.

This thrilling three-act concert will feature powerful pieces that bring forth messages of light, including Kyle Pederson's A Vision Unfolding, Ola Gjeilo's Ubi Caritas, and Morton Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna. Under the masterful batons of Dr. Irene Messoloras and Kenney Potter, hundreds of voices will soar these beautiful works through Carnegie Hall.

The Bethel Choir under the direction of Dr. Merrin Guice Gill will be featured in its own musical set: "Debussy, Hagenberg, and Carter—Bethel Choir and Diversity of Sound."

The Bethel Choir presents three selections with intended diverse sound ideals. Debussy's "Yver, vous n'estes qu'un villan," from his Trois Chanson, paints a picture of winter's harshness with playful free vibrato and crisp vocal color, while Elaine Hagenberg's Alleluia contains sonorous chords requiring a senza vibrato clarity. Finally, Dr. Roland Carter's work Hold Fast to Dreams is bombastic and declarative, performed with the rich operatic quality demanded by idiomatically African American choral works, grounded in the African American Spiritual tradition. The goal of our program is to provide authentic performance practice to engage the listener in a unique sound perspective for each selection.—Note by Dr. Merrin Guice Gill
